1. Tell me how you first got involved in with the subject you are teaching. What piqued your interest?
I have always enjoyed making art, and had an incredible high school art teacher who really brought out my latent art ability and inspired me to become an art teacher. I first went to college to become an art teacher, changed my major to painting, than fell in love with photography. I delight in being able to in an instant capture what I see and share the beauty around me with others.
2. Before becoming a teacher, how were you involved (in the subject you are teaching)?
My main career has been in advertising- I moved to New York City right after school to get involved in magazine publishing. I first did production, then outside sales, finishing up in marketing and public relations. I have done freelance photography on the side since graduating from college, everything from editorial to fine art to weddings to portrait work.
3. What made you decide to leave the business world and become a teacher?
When 9/11 happened, I was downtown, just ten blocks away from Ground Zero, and saw the buildings fall. Quite honestly didn’t know if all of Manhattan would be bombed. I lost two friends that day, who were both only 30 years old, and realized that my plan of “some day” becoming an art teacher had to be put in motion right then. I quit my job weeks later and left town to go to graduate school for art education.
4. What do you like most about being a teacher?
I honestly have the best job in the world. I love everything about photography, so to be able to share my passion with others is a thrill. It’s been a wonderful experience to see my students become better and better artists as the year progresses, and see them fall in love with photography too.
