Being able to restore a photograph is a great skill to have as a photographer!  There may be times that you need to scan and "bring back to life" a photograph that has been in the family and has torn, or restore a photograph that's been damaged through natural disasters such as hurricanes etc.  There are people that are professional photo restorers, and may spend days restoring a photograph.  For our purposes, we are going to use the tutorial below to restore a photograph.

Here is the website for the tutorial
Do the steps listed to restore the photograph and save at 300 dpi.  Upload the before and after photos to My Big Campus along with an explanation of what you did to create the restoration.

Final Project
Project proposal
First tell me what you are planning to do and what you hope to gain from it.
Be specific!  Since this is a final project, it needs to be rigorous and show depth of knowledge.  If you have access to a personal camera, please do feel free to shoot part of your project at home but also be prepared to shoot and do work in class.  You can not use photographs that you have already handed in.
Every project has to have a research component from at least two different sources listed (not wikipedia) and explanation which is worth 20% of the project grade.
If time permits, you will be doing a quick presentation of your project to the class.

Some pertinent final project ideas that you may choose from, or decide on your own with teacher approval:

1.     Portraits- do a series of eight environmental portraits in an appropriate setting with the use of props and utilizing composition techniques such as the rule of thirds and framing.  Research two separate portrait photographers and write a 2 page paper about the photographers, what you liked about their work, and how learning about them influenced the style of photography you did.  Show preliminary sketches/ideas of what you are going to do and how that influenced the final outcome.

2.     Mandalas- do a series of eight mandalas increasing the complexity- do at least one circular, sixteen panels, etc.  Research different ways of creating mandalas and then write a 2 page paper giving step by step instructions on how you created them, and about the various ways mandalas were used in history.
Here are a few tutorials on making circular mandalas (not so easy, but amazing results)
**PLEASE NOTE***
I put a circular mandala template in the shared folder that is 8" square, 2 layers and 300 resolution.

http://www.earthmandalas.com/how/
youtube tutorial (watch on your phone or at home)

3.     Book cover- do a book cover and six photo illustrations for a fiction book or poem of your choice.  Include thumbnails of what you planned out before starting with the project. Write a 1 page paper outlining how your photographs relate to the story.

4.     Stop Motion video- do a two minute long stop motion video telling a story with a beginning, middle and end- can be a music video or commercial.  Have the music relate to the video (you may have to bring a song in) and do not use just a quick shutter speed- include  “suspension of reality.” Write a one to two page paper detailing the steps you did to create your video and write about two other stop motion videos you researched and were inspired by.  Include story boards that are made beforehand.

5.     Do a series of 8 advertisements for a product of your choice and a 1-2 page paper detailing what you did to try to “sell” your product.  Include sketches that were made beforehand.

6.     Do a series of 8 surrealistic photographs, researching the work of Salvador Dali and creating work in Adobe Photoshop using tools you haven’t experimented with yet.  Write a 1-2 page paper detailing what you did and about his work.

7.     Do a series of 8 invisible photographs, increasing the complexity.  Write a 1-2 page paper explaining what you did and researching DADA artists and how they influenced your work.  Max Ernst and Man Ray are two good examples of DADA photographic artists.
-invisible- take a photo with a person in it, and a photo with the person gone.  Put the layer of the person on top of the background layer and use the erase tool to get rid of the person.  Adjust the brightness/contrast as needed to make it look like one image.

8.     Do a series of 8 HDR photographs, increasing the complexity and amount of exposures used. Utilize composition techniques such as the rule of thirds, framing and leading line.  Write a 2 page paper about the process and research two photographers that deal in the HDR technique.
-HDR technique- take 7 exposures of one composition, and go file > automate > merge to HDR Pro.  Click on "remove ghosts" if needed to make sure the images are perfectly on top of each other and adjust as needed.

Graded on:
Time on task/ Craftsmanship: 10 points
(use time wisely and not thrown together at the last minute, no dust or smudges etc)
Research Paper: 20 points
(thorough, two sources, correct length, 12 point type single spaced)
Project: 70 points
Highly aesthetic and original.  Purposeful use of composition, angles, lighting, and color (30 points)
Very Compelling.  Makes viewer reflect on meaning or message.  The Viewer will remember the work.  (10 points)
Creative, student went above and beyond what have done in past (20 points)
Reflects research done on topic (10 points)

Every photograph within the series MUST be spotless/ no dust or smudges/ main subject completely in focus/ appropriate brightness and contrast with correct exposures.

This is the final project of the year which shows the culmination of all the things you learned this year so I expect these photographs to blow me away!

You will be creating a Traditional resume

Read: What is a Resume?

Activity: Make 3 columns on a piece of paper.
Column 1 – Skills, talents, abilities and interests.
Column 2 – Employment and achievement history, including jobs, volunteer work, community service and any achievements or awards. Don't forget to include art shows you have participated in- (COAL Student show, Del Mar Fair, and artwork published in Literary Arts Magazine)
Column 3 – Jobs you aspire to hold, either in the short term (for example, a summer job or internship, an after-school job or a volunteer position) or in the long term, or fields in which you might be interested in working. Alternatively, you might list colleges or graduate schools you are interested in attending.

Traditional Print Résumé
Expand your list in columns one and two, taking each item and explaining or describing it in four sentences or less. Detail when and where the work or activity took place, what it entailed, what your duties and achievements were, what skills you developed, and so on.

Then, using the samples in the template folder on the shared drive or a MS Word template, craft a basic resume, using one or more items in column three to develop an objective and focus. Return to the tips in the article to work around any personal challenges, such as a lack of employment history.

BE SURE to add an area for skills that you learned in this class:
Adobe Photoshop
iMovie
DSLR Camera Operation
Microsoft Office Suite

Print out to 'HP Printer' and turn in before leaving class

To create a mandala, do these steps in order:
1. Choose a photograph that you think may look good as a mandala.  Tree branches, flowers, etc work well.
2. Select a square region within that area to use for your mandala and crop.
3. Go to image> image size > 4 inches high x 4 inches wide with 300 resolution.
4. Create a new image by going file> new> custom size > 8 inches high x 8 inches high w/ 300 resolution.
5. Drag the image of the original crop to the blank canvas and position it in a corner.
6. Duplicate the layer by going layer> duplicate layer
7. Move the duplicate layer to the side and change how it's positioned by going edit> transform >rotate > flip horizontal, or flip vertical, etc.
8. Keep duplicating the original layer to make four separate layers of the same image and work with them to make sure they meet in a pleasing matter.
9. If there's any white areas, reposition the images so they overlap slightly.
10. When they look best, merge the layers and then adjust the brightness/contrast as needed.
11. Save as a jpeg and save as lastname.firstname.mandala1, 2, 3 (do three total) in the Mandala shared folder.
CHALLENGE- resize your image to 2" square and create a new document that is 8" square and grid it out into 2" squares.  Put your images within that canvas (see my example below).

Scan Project

4/30/2013

You will create a composite image using three photographs that you scanned out of a magazine or book, utilizing what you previously learned in layers.  You may use any filters or techniques of your choice to make the image be as strong as possible, as well as add typographical elements.

Think of the following when making your image:
filters/ opacity/ scale/ emphasis/ color/ lassoing certain areas

Maybe consider this composite similar to a photo illustration for a magazine story.
The composite image will be 8 1/2"  x 11" inches, US paper size, 300 dpi.

After completing your image, you are to write in Microsoft word an outline of what you did to complete your assignment.  List Photoshop tools and techniques and list them in the order you used them.

Place both your assignment (named as lastname.firstname.composite) and your word document in a subfolder with your name within the Composite Photograph shared folder.

Graded on:
Time on task: 10 points
Craftsmanship: 10 points
Word document explaining how you did the project: 10 points
Final piece- original, all elements worked, tried new techniques, has a theme: 70 points

Here is the website for the tutorial
Do the steps listed to restore the photograph and save at 300 dpi

Here is the website for a photograph to choose from the Sandy disaster- please choose one, and open up in photoshop and resize to 300 dpi.  Be sure to keep the old version for the before and after version.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/careforsandy/sets/72157632901547046/

Put the photographs on the two photo template (two sheets total), indicating what is before and after and what specific Photoshop tools you used and how you used it (ie I used the cloning tool to duplicate the patches of grass that were missing etc).  Put them in the 4.19 Retouching folder.
