Elements and Principles of Photography Poster
For this project, you will be collaborating with a partner to create a poster depicting one of the elements and principles of art, as assigned by the teacher, and presenting your poster to the class. You will be combing through the magazines in class to find three good examples of that element or principle of art.
First be sure to have a paragraph at the top of the poster with a description of what the element or principle is as explained in the presentation.
For each photograph, write a paragraph for each explaining the following:
1. Describe the photograph- where do you think it is? What do you see?
2. Explain how the element or principle was used and why it was effective and why the photographer chose to use that element or principle in the composition.
3. Explain where the photographer was when taking the photograph- what angle? Up high, down low? Why?
4. Lastly, explain what other element or principle was used (if you are assigned an element, then explain a principle or vice-versa).
Example of a paragraph depicting the element of line:
This photograph is of a river going through the mountains. The photographer uses the element of leading line through depicting the stream going through themountains. It goes from the bottom left of the page and it makes your eye lead to the top right of the page, like a journey. I assume the photographer took the photograph from the air or from another mountain peak since it was such a high angle. It was effective because otherwise you wouldn’t see the massive scale of the mountains and how the water looks. This photograph is a good example of the use of the principle of harmony because of all the different shades of green going well together.
Graded based on:
10 points: time on task and teamwork- both contributed to the poster
20 points: presentation- thorough in explaining the element or principle and how the photographs related to that e/p
10 points: craftsmanship/ nice and neat/ great visual impact
30 points: quality of the photographs used to illustrate the points
30 points: thoroughness of the descriptions for the photographs/ all points covered
Welcome to class! It is my huge pleasure to have you in Photographic Imaging, and I hope you will enjoy the year! Many of my students said it was one of the most interesting classes they have had, and I hope you find the same! This year long course will be teaching you how to use a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera, iPhoto, iMovie, Adobe Photoshop, how to read and analyze artwork, and most importantly how to really see. You'll be working both individually and in collaborative groups to create some amazing projects. It is NOT an "easy" class- you will be expected to be working at your very best at all times and will be learning a lot of technical information. The students that do best in my classes are the ones that continuously work hard and push themselves daily. In addition to the technical work, we will also be having some guest photography professional speakers and college admission representatives. Here's to a great year together!
