Instructions on how to get this cool effect here
To shoot: Take 24+ photographs, using oil and water. Note that this is trial and error. Focus on the bubbles, not the cell phone screen. Use as low as aperture as possible (f/4 for the 18- 140 mm lens, or f/2 for the 50 mm lens). To process: Crop out any sides of the cell phone etc to get the abstract bubbles with color. To get rid of the "Chinet" logo, use the Content Aware tool. Please note it may not always work! -lasso around the word "Chinet" - press edit- fill- content aware the Chinet should be gone- if it looks too funky, keep it in or crop it out, your artistic choice. Put your top six photographs in the common drive as lastname-firstname-colored-water1.jpg, 2 etc. Put your top six photographs in the Padlet with your name as the title and the camera information (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and whether it was on aperture or shutter speed priority). padlet.com/kclarkart/Colorwater1 https://padlet.com/kclarkart/colordrops2 https://padlet.com/kclarkart/ColorWater4 https://padlet.com/kclarkart/ColorWater5 https://padlet.com/kclarkart/ColorWater6 You will create TWO panoramas using the Photoshop automate function. Merge layers and save as
lastname-firstname-panorama1.jpg and panorama2.jpg in the 05-01-2018 Hockney folder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjkpobjBcJU&feature=youtu.be You are also going to create TWO David Hockney inspired photo collages, based on the images that you took at the Duck Pond. They should be of two different compositional rules (leading line, framing, symmetry, crop or rule of thirds). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oQG2d0KVr0&feature=youtu.be To create a new document for the Hockney Project File: New Custom size 11” high x 14” wide 300 resolution Save as lastname-firstname-hockney.jpg To create your artwork: Open up your photos from iPhoto that you took Drag a thumbnail over from the top left of the composition Position it into place on the top left hand side of the blank canvas Go to edit > transform > scale to get it to fit into place, dragging it from a corner diagonally towards the center and pressing shift so that you’re not changing the proportions of the individual photo. Keep doing that with each different photo, overlapping some to create separate layers Use the move tool on each appropriate layer to edit/transform and move them to make a complete composition If you want to move a photograph to put it behind another one, make sure you are on that highlighted layer and go to layer > arrange > move to back When you are done, a. Save a version in Photoshop with all the layers for yourself (in case there needs to be changes) then b. Merge layers and save as lastname-firstname-hockney1, 2.jpg MAKE SURE there is no dust in the sky, use brightness/contrast etc as needed on the photos to make them as high a quality as possible! Save in the 05-01-2018 Hockney folder c. Create a Padlet named 'David Hockney Inspired Collage and Panorama" d. Put your two images of the Hockney AND the two panoramas on there as large as possible on your blog, indicating in the comments what the compositional rule was. e. To resize your image to put on your blog, open it in Photoshop. Go to image> image size and change it to about 8" wide which will bring the size to about 10 MB. RESAVE it as lastname-firstname-hockney1-SMALLER.jpg, lastname-firstname-hockney-smaller2.jpg. ALWAYS HAVE A REGULAR SIZED PIECE AND SMALLER ONE. Once you make an image smaller in resolution, you can't get the quality back to the original so it's best to just have it saved as another copy. f. Write a two paragraph writeup 1. Research who David Hockney is including when and where he was born and where he does his work, what type of artist he is, and how this artwork emulates his style (DO NOT COPY and PASTE). (one + paragraphs) 2. What you did to create this artwork both while taking photos and in Adobe Photoshop (one + paragraphs) Examples from past students Graded based on 5/5 time on task, citizenship, no cell phones, made it to class on time, partner work 3/3 photograph 1st piece- all images in focus, not too bright or dark, no dust in sky 3/3 photograph 2nd piece- all images in focus, not too bright or dark, no dust in sky 3/3 computer work- 1- creative, used 6 + images, clear composition 3/3 computer work 2- creative, used 6 + images, clear composition 3/3 post- posted as "David Hockney", compositions listed in comments, did 2 paragraph write up with bio of David Hockney and information on how you did the project https://padlet.com/kclarkart/Hockney1 https://padlet.com/kclarkart/Hockney2 padlet.com/kclarkart/Hockney4 padlet.com/kclarkart/Hockney5 padlet.com/kclarkart/Hockney6 It's time for the fair! All entries need to be in NOW to hit the deadline and so we have to choose what image you want displayed!
After you have decided which image to use for the Del Mar fair (and it is approved by me), do these things: 1. Fill out the following survey IMMEDIATELY so that we don't miss the deadline. Period 1 Period 2 Period 4 Period 5 Period 6 2. Resize your image to 11" x 14", 300 resolution (can be vertical or horizontal). https://youtu.be/mWinRNaBNto Open your photo up in Photoshop. Use the crop tool. At the top left, it gives you the option of W x H x Resolution. If your photograph is horizontal, type 14 in in the first box, 11 in in the second box and 300 px/in. It will show you where it will crop. Crop it and rename it. DO NOT DOWNLOAD YOUR PHOTO FROM A PADLET. You need to find the ORIGINAL image from Google Drive or from the class folder. Your image on your website was compressed (made smaller) and if we try to print that it will look horrible. I will not print poor quality images. 3. Save your work as lastname-firstname-delmarfair.jpg in the common drive 04-20-2018 Del Mar Fair. 4. Create a word document for the fair, explaining the following in paragraph form using academic language: a. title of the piece b. where the image was taken c. what the compositional rule is (rule of thirds, symmetry, leading line, framing, crop) d. what sort of camera and lens was used (Nikon D7200 with a 18- 140mm lens) e.how you created the image- what hardware and software you used (Adobe Photoshop and/or iPhoto) f. explain why your image is in the specific division it's in and how it fits that category (color vs. portrait vs. landscape)- see details below g. that it was printed on Epson Glossy Photo Paper on the Epson P800 digital printer. h. save as lastname-firstname-delmarfair in the same 04-20-2018 Del Mar Fair folder as the image. (your name, date, school name and teachers name should be on the top left of the document) Save as a word file. JUDGING CRITERIA: Composition; Impact; Technical Quality and Appearance. Specify the photographic technique under which the project should be judged. "I'm using my lunch break to search for some Baltimore Orioles that are overwintering. They should have been gone by October or November, but there have been several sightings lately." "So why did they stay?" "Well Baltimore Orioles love fruit, and I'm pretty sure all the bird nerds have been feeding them oranges to keep them around." "Are you a bird nerd?" "I try to keep it to my lunch break." You will be taking photographs and interviewing six people for this project based on Humans of New York
One teacher or administrator, one staff (janitor, security, cafeteria worker etc) and four students, including one from this class (someone you have never taken a photo of before in class). They cannot be interviewed by anyone else in my photo classes as I want to get as much of the student body and staff as possible. Explain to them what the project is about and get permission from them to write their story and show their photo to the school. Do not write anything that could be potentially embarrassing or something they may regret revealing later down the road. Of course, you are welcome to photograph more then the six. Take a photo of them where they tell you- where it will tell a story about them or what they told you about. As always, make sure there's no junk in the background, your horizons are straight, no random trashcans/photobombs in the background. Take at least six photos (so you have a few to choose from)- full figure, from waist up, horizontal and vertical in an appropriate setting and make sure they look good! I recommend taking them in a shaded area so there's no harsh shadows under their eyes. Choose students from different grade levels to get a full feel of the school. Have a different question for each person- not just a yes or no question- and do a write up of what they say. If it makes it easier, use the microphone on your phone to make sure you're getting all of what they're saying. Note you may have to do most of this during lunch or after school. I prefer that at least one of your subjects is someone you do not know. Put your image and write up on this Padlet- it will be the same for ALL periods. The title is your subject's FIRST name (no last name- unless of course it's staff/teacher/administration, in which case it will be Mr. or Ms. and their last name), the question in italics, and what they said, in 1- 2 paragraphs, grammatically correct as possible and in quotation marks. At the end write, reported by your first and last name. Do NOT create your own Padlet, you will be putting all your images and write up on the master Padlet. Put your six photos in the common drive folder 04-12-2018 Humans of RBV as lastname-firstname-firstnameofsubject.jpg https://padlet.com/kclarkart/HumansOfRBV The Kelly McGinnis Memorial Foundation Grant is for San Diego County high school seniors who have been involved in Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs during high school and intend to go on to CTE schooling or have been hired directly into their chosen industry. As you work on each layer, make sure you select that layer and the eyeball so you can see what you're doing. 5. Move each layer over slightly to the right. Hit enter. Do for all five layers. 6. Once you are done moving all five layers, select all the layers including the background layer by clicking on them individually and pressing command + click. 8.
