James Nachtwey is considered on of the pre-eminent photojournalists and more specifically one of the greatest war photographers of our time. He has spent over twenty-five years photographing regions in turmoil throughout the world. His photographs capture the front lines of armed conflict and human suffering. His photographs have appeared in many notable journals including Life, National Geographic, New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, Time, and many others. Additionally in 1986, he was invited to join Magnum, a photographic agency founded in 1947.

This photograph was taken in Bosnia in 1993 during the ethnic cleansing in Mostar. The diagonal lines created by the wall and door leads the viewer's eyes to the Croat militiaman. He is framed against a window as he fires on his Moslem neighbors. The deteriorating wallpaper, the unmade bed, and broken shutters add to the tension of the scene.
Questions- please answer on a piece of paper in complete sentences:
1. James Nachtway is known as a "War Photographer" or "Anti-War Photographer." Why do you think people refer him to him as that? How does his works reflect this idea?
2. Where would you see these types of photographs?
3. Describe how Nachtway captures the tension in this scene.
4. Which aspect is dominant in this photograph? Which ones are subordinate?
5. What do you think was the purpose of creating this artwork?
6. How does the use of photography influence the meaning of this artwork?

You and your classmates are going to work together to create a story with four photos to narrate to your peers while presenting your artwork.
-Each person in your group has to contribute an artwork and a well written paragraph that helps tell the story
- Each artwork has to incorporate floating or invisibility
- Each artwork has to incorporate some filters from Photoshop
- Each artwork has to incorporate at least five elements that you have collaged into the photograph
- The artwork has to work together/ have a common thread
- The story has to work together/ have a common thread

The team will be broken out as following-
One person will be the task master, making sure everyone is on task and on time
One person will be the editor, helping people with their writing and doing the final edit as needed
One person will be the art director, helping people with their Photoshop work as needed
One person will be the cheerleader and present at the end.
Note: each person is still responsible to create an artwork and at least a paragraph of writing!
It's totally okay to have more then one artwork a person!
Use photoshop tutorials online to try something new!!

Directions on how to float/ be invisible is on your shot list.  It's a Moncure secret, only open to my students!

ALWAYS save your work as a Photoshop file before merging just in case you need to do further work on it.

Save your work as lastname-firstname-surreal.psd with all the layers NOT merged so that you can make changes later if needed- for yourself in your finished projects folder
Merge the layers and save the work as lastname-firstname-surreal.jpg for yourself and to turn in
Turn your finished artwork and writing within the shared folder 02-26-2016 Invisible.

Create a group padlet with the web address named "surreal" that you will be presenting from and have the artwork and writing on- add group members by going to modify- privacy- add people by email- submit.

Add your group padlet to your class one. The title should be your story name and the description will be the group member names.

Follow the tutorial from here on how to create a layer mask. If you would rather watch a video, here is the link.

AFTER you are done with the exercise, find a photograph that emulates what you want to be in ten years, according to your worksheet.  For example, find a photograph of a veterinarian in their examination room, and  use layer masks to switch faces. It should be the same as your initial goals sheet!
Photo 1- With or as a celebrity
Photo 2. What you want to be as a career in ten years
Photo 3. You accomplishing something (i.e. an oscar, on stage, doing a marathon...)

Save as lastname-firstname-layermask1.jpg, lastname-firstname-layermask2.jpg, lastname-firstname-layermask3.jpg

Go to Google Images and get a LARGE file.  If you need help, the youtube video for getting a large file in Google is here

Follow steps 1-18 and save the work in the 02-08-2016 Layer Mask Folder in the Common Drive,

Graded based on:
5 points: Time on task- worked hard, good citizenship
5 points: Craftsmanship- high resolution source photo, resized to 300 pixels per inch, saved as jpg lastname-firstname-layermask1, 2 and 3 in the proper folder.
5 points: Photoshop work- good sizing of the face, skin color match, doesn't look pasted on the source
5 points: Goals worksheet- filled out completely, thoughtful
